Financing Zero Hunger
The Irish Forum for International Agricultural Development (IFIAD) is delighted to present its Annual Conference on the theme of Financing Zero Hunger, with the support of Irish Aid, Department of Foreign Affairs.
Date: 6th November 2024
Venue: Department of Foreign Affairs, Iveagh House, St Stephens Green, Dublin
Format: 10.00am – 3.00pm
The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) Report 2024 clearly presented that the countries with the most alarming levels of hunger tend to be those with the least access to financing, highlighting the need for innovative, inclusive and equitable solutions to scale up investments in those areas. While sustainable food systems are critical to addressing all major development challenges, the transition requires additional financial resources of up to USD 350 billion per year by 2030 (IFPRI 2022).
At the same time, global trends in development and donor financing are shifting, with food security and nutrition taking less than a quarter of total official development assistance and other official flows. In the period from 2017 to 2021, these flows amounted to USD 76 billion per year, of which only 34 percent helped address the major drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition.
This year’s IFIAD conference will take stock of the escalating costs of achieving zero hunger, with only six years remaining until the 2030 deadline of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We will examine where and how future investment should be focused to reach the furthest behind and support agricultural and rural development. The development community working on food systems is increasingly focusing on financing. The Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development will be held in Spain in July 2025 and will seek to address financial barriers to achieving global sustainable development and climate goals. In March 2025, the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit will be held in Paris and aims to elevate nutrition in the global development agenda. Within this context, we will look at the challenges and opportunities for financing sustainable food systems, in particular financing which reaches the furthest behind. We will hear from a range of public and private stakeholder perspectives including NGOs, foundations, private sector, government, investment banks and others on how innovative financing solutions can drive investment towards healthier, more equitable, and sustainable ways of producing and consuming food.
